Papers, 1877-1944, 1889-1913.

The papers of Lydia Lord Davis and of her husband, Francis Ward Davis (1857-1900) constitute an excellent source for the study of the lives of China missionaries up to the time of the 1900 Boxer Rebellion in which Francis Davis was slain. Correspondence, diaries, photographs, and printed materials document the couple's eight-year residence (1889-97) in Shansi Province, China, as missionaries of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. The post-1900 papers, consisting mainly of professional correspondence, pertain to Lydia Lord Davis' continuing service on behalf of missions and the education of women in China and Japan.
